Bang it Out
I’ve had bangs off and on since I was 3 years old. I am blessed to have thick hair. It gets complicated because it’s also wavy. Humidity plays a series of frustrating tricks on me and if my bangs aren’t cut correctly, I can look like a poorly groomed poodle.
Why do parents take their kids to the cheapest hair-cutting place they can find? There was a time when my mom would take me to the local cosmetology school. I swear the students saw me coming and just knew they had a test subject they could humiliate. Best to apologize after the fact was clearly a motto for a few of them. “I’m sorry. I’m still learning. Good thing hair grows fast!”
Over the years, I attempted to avoid the trip by trimming my own hair. I’d like to say I was better than the students, but looking back on pictures, I was way worse.
Now that I’m older and pay for my own haircuts, I am happy to report I love my stylist. He is amazing and he knows how to cut bangs. I also found over the years that not all stylists know how to cut bangs. It looks so simple, right? (If you need help finding the right hairstylist, you’ll want to check this out: “Finding The Right Hairstylist.")
I paid really close attention to Shar and how he trimmed my fringe. He took his time, but it looked like something I could do at home if I needed a quick fix in between visits. The first attempt at this DIY moment wasn’t crazy bad, but it wasn’t good either. When Shar saw me next, he knew I had attempted the unthinkable. The frown on his face said it all. I confessed immediately in rambling run on sentences that ended with me needing a bag to breath in – I’m exaggerating, but it was blurt of information that made no sense and I was left sucking in oxygen at a rapid pace.
The frown softened and was replaced with the sweet smile of a man that wanted to help.
As Shar started to give me a step-by-step tutorial on how to cut my bangs at home, I felt like I was being inducted into a private club. The tricks and techniques to perfect bangs were revealed! Eureka!
It’s not something I recommend doing all the time, but if you need to get through an extra week or two before visiting your stylist, the link below shows you what to do to keep yourself looking beautiful.
