LATHER ME LATER
Are you a shower or a bath person? I tend to like both. Partly because I am somewhat obsessed with being clean, and partly because I love bubbles. Needless to say, when I found out shampoo lather had nothing to do with cleaning my hair I was shocked. A lifetime of lather and squeaky clean hair said otherwise.
It’s always an odd moment when you find out that something you believe, and even cherish, is completely wrong. Cherish might be a strong word for my lather affection, but it’s true. I love lather. And I know I am not alone.
The entire process of working the shampoo into my hair and building up that wonderful lather that smells so clean and feels so good is something I look forward to after a workout. This might be a childhood issue I’m refusing to accept. Sort of like not being able to go to sleep without your favorite stuffed animal. It’s a part of the process and if you deviate from it bad things happen. In this case, my hair not being clean.
But, it’s simply not true. Lather does not make your hair clean. In fact, most shampoo lather is created by sulfates, which is a detergent, is a chemical, and is not good for your hair or you as a human being. And don’t think just because it’s topical it’s not getting into your body – it does via your skin, your ears and you probably ingest some of it as well. Gross, right? I thought so.
The good news is natural products can and do lather. Not as much as the chemical ingredients, but you do get lather.
With so many chemicals in our world, my shift to a natural shampoo was an easy decision to make.
